"Chrome" Removal: Method
-
Locate the plastic container in a well ventilated area suitable for spraying corrosive liquids, away from animals and children.
-
Place the chrome layer you want to strip in the plastic container.
-
Wearing gloves, shake the can of oven cleaner throughly and apply to sufficiently cover the model.
-
Seal the container and leave for 5 minutes.
-
You will notice the aluminium dissolves almost immediately revealing completely clean plastic.
-
Turn model over and repeat.
-
Rinse both container and model under cold running water, if any aluminium coating remains repeat the process.
-
The plastic layer is exposed, clean, and ready for glue and paint.
PRO TIPS:
-
Oven cleaner wont affect plastic meaning it can be used to clean up and refresh old plastic parts, notably dirty interiors of secondhand toy cars.
-
You can keep select areas of chrome (such as grills and bumpers) by painting them with masking fluid to protect them during stripping.
